dangerous pseudo-science - At the Promethean Trust, we ve been teaching dyslexic children to read and spell since 1990. They come in all shapes and sizes, and other than their problems learning to read, they fall into perfectly normal distribution curves. Any idea that some of these children were dyslexic, and others merely thick, is preposterous. It is undoubtedly true that some children have a lot of trouble learning to read and spell, and that intelligence has little to do with the problem. It is also true that these problems are in part genetic. However, The Gift of Dyslexia is little more than a cruel hoax on parents who are desperate to alleviate the suffering of their child. In 2002, the British Psychological Society published a report which questioned the whole concept of dyslexia. All of the tests now used to diagnose the condition produce so many false positives as to render them useless. There has never been an agreed definition for dyslexia, so it s no wonder that it can t be diagnosed with any certainty. What is undoubtedly true is that good teaching can all but eliminate illiteracy. Synthetic phonics, the method we have always used, is now recognised as being far more effective than the incoherent mixture of methods recommended in our old National Literacy Strategy. We have been working with schools in Suffolk, Gloucestershire and Southampton to develop new programmes which work with the most serious learning difficulties. Our Bearing Away, produced by Sound Foundations Books earlier this year, has helped many children who had previously been written off as unteachable.Books like The Gift of Dyslexia delude parents into believing exactly the wrong things: One--Dyslexics have special abilities, like enhanced spatial awareness--fact: children with reading problems are no more or less likely than other children to have enhanced abilities in other areas.Two--Dyslexics can never become normal readers, and they have to learn coping strategies--fact: with the right kind of teaching, nearly all children can learn to read and spell normally. Three--Telling my child that he (or she) has a gift will make him feel better about himself.--fact: most kids hate being different, because they get taunted and feel left out.Research has proved beyond a doubt that the ability to read and write correlates very strongly with later success in finding stable and well-paid employment. If you have a child who can t read well, buying this book could be the worst investment you will ever make. I ll leave the final word to one of our ex-pupils: If dyslexia is a gift, they can have it back.
why so many big words and not in a sans comic font ? - I was very sinical at first, saying things like, next in the sersis the gift of 2 broken legsI m 28, found out i had the gift when i was 23 but have not looked at a solution to it since this year when my work have helped me out before then i just struggled. i have enjoyed most of the 15 or so pages i have read, but like with other books in this Font it hurts my eyes. i know that for me reading in a sans comic font is better and the information slips in rather than having to concertrate. i just wondered why this was not written in that font as i have been told it is a good font for all dislexic people. also there are many big words in there, words i never got the chance to learn at school. the 8 traits was good. i dunno weather people who dont have dislexia experiance thoughts as reality i thought everyone did. maybe someone can fill me in. this books suggests its just us.I would also like to knwo why on earth this is not in audio format.... SO on the whole some interesting and factual stuff but bloody hard for me to read.
